Benefits of Online Counseling

For many people, the idea of attending a counseling session through the use of the internet is a novel (and potentially anxiety provoking) concept; however, the practice of online counseling has actually been around a little longer than most people realize. When the technology for video chatting/conferencing began to appear in the mainstream practitioners in the healthcare field began to discover the potential role for the technology within their work. Therapists, in particular, began to conduct research around the idea of using video conferencing in the place of in person counseling.

It seems as though a common fear or misconception that many potential clients have regarding the use of online counseling services is that it is a sub-par option compared to in-person services. However, this very concept has been thoroughly researched and it has been found that online counseling (when conducted by a well-trained professional) is just as effective as in-person therapy.

There are also benefits to online therapy that you cannot recreate in an office setting:

  • Many clients feel more comfortable sharing or “opening up” in their own personal environment

  • Practicing skills within an online session is more similar to implementing them in “real life” versus in an office setting

  • Clients have a wider range of options for providers to find their best fit if they aren’t limited to ones within driving distance

  • Clients may be able to increase the consistency of sessions when they can fit them into their schedule more easily

  • Counseling sessions can still be conducted during severe weather or even minor illnesses

  • Clients do not have to sacrifice the added time of a commute or added expense of gas money

  • Clients are able to make a counseling space/atmosphere that is all their own for the most therapeutic experience

Yes, I believe that online therapy is not for every person. those individuals that are looking for a higher intensity of care may want to explore their in-person options. However, I do want to dispel the belief that overall online therapy is the inferior option because it just is not true.
