How to Experience More Joy in Your Life

It can sometimes feel that we are running through life so quickly without a chance to stop and smell the roses. We are constantly on the go doing the things on our to do lists that we don't have enough room for pleasure and joy.

But joy is a vital piece of our life experience. If we are not enjoying our time here on this earth, then what is really the point of it all. I am not saying that every single moment of our lives should be family with immeasurable joy. However, it is important to make it a priority to experience a good amount of joy and pleasure.

In this post, I am going to talk about how you can start to experience more joy on a regular basis. Some of these tips are about how to add new joyful experiences into your life, whereas others are about making the events that are already in your life more joy-filled.

So, if you are interested in fully enjoying the life you have, continue reading and learn how to find the pleasure and joy in your world.

Fully Experience Your Life

The first step to feeling more joy in your life is to actually start experiencing your life. I am talking about getting out of autopilot and really stepping into your life with intention. Don’t just go through the motions of your everyday tasks, truly be present with them.

There are so many opportunities for pleasure that we let pass us by on a daily basis just because the events are habits. The pleasure of a delicious cup of coffee, the sensation of massaging your scalp in the shower, the feeling of a warm breeze on your face as you walk into work. All of these experiences have the potential to bring joy and pleasure to our day if we don't rush through them or take them for granted.

So start bringing your awareness away from the growing to do list in your head and back to what you are actually doing in that moment. Allow yourself to be in the experience fully and remind yourself of the pleasure that the small habits can bring.

Stop Taking Yourself So Seriously

Whether you are a CEO or a major corporation, a stay-at-home mom, a school teacher, or a construction worker, it is okay to not always be serious. Yes there are certain situations where it is most appropriate to behave professionally and more seriously, but there is always room for some joy and personality. 

Humor is a major source of joy and pleasure. You don’t have to be a stand up comedian (but kudos to you if you are!) but you do need to have an open mind to the humor in life. Laugh at yourself when you make a mistake instead of criticizing. Include some clever emojis in your message to your parents. Sing horribly in the car with the windows down at a stop light!

Do anything to stop taking yourself and life in general so seriously. Yes there are a lot of heavy things happening in the world so it is easy to lose sight of the lighter side of living. But, if you can choose to intentionally bring light-heartedness into your daily life.

Try New Things

There may be a boatload of activities and hobbies out there that bring you so much joy, but you would never know because you have never tried them before. We as humans tend to stay in our comfort zone and stick with the things that we know we like already. But there are most likely things out there that you would enjoy even more if you gave them the chance.

So I want you to pull out your town’s recreation calendar, go on your MeetUp app, or just search “things going on in (insert town name here)” as see what sticks out to you. Have you always been interested in how pottery spinning works? Go take a class! Do you not have anybody in your life that understands your interest in character building? Go join a D&D group! Wanting to get outside more often? Search for new places to go hiking around you!

You may not fall in love with everything you try, but just the act of getting out there and doing something different brings a sense of pleasure and joy to your day. You may be surprised with what you find out about yourself.

Move Your Body

We are souls that are living in physical bodies during our time on this Earth. So our physical experiences are just as impactful as our mental and spiritual ones. Getting your physical body involved in the joy-fulfillment process can take the experience to a whole new level.

Like anything else, pleasure and joy are energetic experiences. To get this energy flowing properly, you can move your body to start breaking up old energy blockages. Some of the best ways to get the energies of pleasure and joy to flow are:

  • Dance! Whether it's jumping around waving your hands everywhere or slow and sensual, break out your favorite music and get moving.

  • Physical intimacy (either solo or with a partner(s)): The energy center in the body that is responsible for pleasure and joy is directly related to our sexual organs. In order to experience other pleasures in your life, it is important to prioritize sexual pleasure as well.

  • Stretching: Taking time to slow down to either practice yoga or a more simple stretching routine can get you extremely in tune with your physical body. When you have higher awareness of your body, you can more easily recognize what brings it and you pleasure and joy.
